Groam House Museum is looking for a new Volunteer Treasurer to help us manage our finances effectively and plan confidently for the future.
This role can be combined with becoming a Trustee of Groam House Museum, and we would be delighted to welcome someone interested in contributing to the wider governance and strategic direction of the Museum.

However, becoming a Trustee is not essential: we are equally happy to hear from someone who would prefer to contribute as Treasurer without joining the Board.
We are a small, ambitious museum on the beautiful Black Isle, caring for nationally significant Pictish and Celtic collections alongside the work of artist George Bain. Our activities depend on a committed team of trustees, volunteers and our Museum Manager.

This is an opportunity for someone with financial skills to make a real contribution to the future of a much-loved local museum and charity.
We have exciting ambitions for the Museum's future, including the development of our buildings and facilities, and are particularly keen to hear from someone who could bring financial experience alongside an understanding of organisational development, major projects or capital development.

What would you be doing?

Working closely with our Finance group, Museum Manager and wider team, you
would help ensure that Groam House has the financial information, planning and
systems it needs to operate effectively and pursue its future ambitions.
Depending on your experience and interests, the role would include:

● preparing and presenting clear financial information and reports;
● monitoring income, expenditure and performance against budget;
● managing bank accounts;
● operating payroll;
● supporting financial planning and forecasting;
● contributing to development of the annual budget;
● helping maintain appropriate financial systems and controls;
● supporting grant claims and financial reporting to funders;
● contributing financial input to funding applications and project development;
● helping us assess the affordability and longer-term implications of new
projects;
● supporting financial planning for future development and potential capital
projects;
● contributing to preparation of annual accounts and liaison with our
independent examiner/accountant as appropriate;
● helping ensure that Groam House meets its financial and charity governance
responsibilities.

For someone joining as a Trustee, there would also be the opportunity to contribute to the wider strategy, governance and development of the Museum.

Who we're looking for

You don't need previous museum experience.
We would welcome someone with good financial skills who is comfortable working with budgets and financial information and can explain financial matters clearly to people who may not have a finance background. Experience could come from accountancy, bookkeeping, financial management,
business management or a related area.

We would be particularly interested in hearing from people with experience in one or more of the following:

● charities, voluntary organisations or the wider third sector;
● organisational or business development;
● capital projects or major development projects;
● project finance and financial modelling;
● grant-funded projects and funder reporting;
● longer-term financial planning and sustainability.
Formal accountancy qualifications would be welcome, but they are not essential if
you have relevant experience.

Just as importantly, we are looking for someone who enjoys working collaboratively and would like to use their skills to make a tangible difference to a small, independent museum.

Support and handover

We recognise that taking on the finances of an established organisation takes time.
Our current Treasurer, Paul, is remaining on Groam House Museum's Board of
Trustees and will be available to provide continuity, knowledge, handover and
support to the incoming Treasurer.
Paul is also willing, if helpful, to continue supporting the Museum's strategic
budgeting during the transition. This gives us flexibility to shape the new Treasurer role around the successful candidate's experience and interests while providing time to become familiar with the organisation.

Looking to the future

This is an interesting time to become involved with Groam House.
Alongside caring for and sharing our collections, we are thinking ambitiously about the Museum's future development and how our buildings, facilities and organisation can evolve over the coming years.

We would therefore particularly value a Treasurer who is interested not only in
helping us manage today's finances well, but in helping us understand what might be possible tomorrow.

Time commitment and location

This is a voluntary role and can be undertaken on a flexible basis, with much of the work possible remotely.
For candidates interested in combining the Treasurer role with becoming a Trustee, attendance at Board meetings would also be required.
We would be happy to discuss the expected commitment and shape of the role
informally before you decide whether it is right for you.

Renumeration

As a volunteer (trustee), this is an unpaid role; however, we do offer reimbursement
for reasonable expenses:

● Travel Reimbursement: For travel to and from the museum, we provide
mileage reimbursement or public transport costs:
● If the journey is over 10 miles from your home, we reimburse standard
mileage rates unless public transport is a suitable and accessible
alternative.
● In cases where public transport is convenient, we reimburse the
equivalent transport cost, even if you choose to drive. However, if
public transport is impractical (e.g., bus schedules causing long
delays), we reimburse mileage instead.
● Other Expenses: Other costs directly related to your trustee duties can be reimbursed with receipts or evidence.

We aim to ensure that financial constraints are not a barrier to participation in supporting Groam House Museum.
