Cyrenians | Spotlight

Finance Manager Cyrenians

Cyrenians is a well recognised, and award-winning charity focused on addressing homelessness, both its causes and the consequences on the affected individuals.

Established in 1968 from humble student beginnings, the organisation has grown over the last 50 years with now more than 50 projects. In 2021 alone, over 13,000 people were supported by the charity.

With the core mission of supporting people excluded from various aspects of their lives, Cyrenians engage with individuals throughout their life journey and work towards the organisation’s Vision of an inclusive society in which we all have the opportunities to live valued and fulfilled lives.

Central to that Mission are the 4 core values of Compassion, Respect, Integrity and Innovation. These are reflected in the person-centred work that continues to adapt to reflect changes in the local, and national, community.

Director of Finance and Corporate Services

Support provided by Cyrenians is flexible and wide-ranging, from assisting with employment, addressing conflict and maintaining a place to call home. That support depends on the generosity of many funders and supporters, as well as the various social enterprises and social businesses operated by the charity, with commercial operations accounting for approximately 20% of the organisation’s turnover.

With a clear 5-year plan, Cyrenians continues to work towards their core strategic aim to reduce the number of people who experience homelessness or its root causes.

The Director of Finance and Corporate Services plays a critical strategic role in the Leadership Team. This role reports to the Chief Executive and works in close collaboration with other members of the Leadership Team, Senior and Service Managers, and all staff within their team.

This is an existing role with the current Director of Finance and Corporate Services due to retire at the end of 2022 after completing the handover with the successful candidate.

The successful candidate is expected to be seen to live the charity’s core values in all aspects of carrying out the role. They will support the charity’s work by delivering on the strategic plan, managing strategic risk, developing financial strategy and plans, and seeking new opportunities and innovations. High-performing and cost-efficient practices across both finance and corporate services enable energy and resources to be focused on delivering quality support and driving forward the ambition to create a more inclusive society.

The Director of Finance and Corporate Services role is best suited to an innovative, forward-thinking, and commercially minded individual. The successful candidate will be high performing and driven with a strategic mindset to address opportunities, such as maximising the organisation’s digital presence and managing growing commercial interests. Therefore, a commercial background may be beneficial, including how best to structure the organisation’s activities. However, the successful candidate must understand the Third sector and ideally have relevant experience.

The successful candidate must have a professional accountancy qualification and experience in Strategic Leadership across a combination of the following areas:

  • Strategic risk management
  • Strategic financial management
  • Human resource management
  • Governance
  • IT
  • Compliance: legal, statutory, regulatory
  • Facilities management

The Director of Finance and Corporate Services will be able to assimilate and analyse information quickly and accurately and think strategically, formulate decisions and make recommendations. They will have a proven ability to use MS Office products, a recognised computerised accounting package and an understanding of the strategic importance of IT to the delivery of an organisation’s success.

The Director of Finance and Corporate Services will also have excellent communication skills, covering oral, written and inter-personal, and be experienced in dealing with individuals and groups at all levels, including strategic report-writing. They will also have demonstrable strong business acumen and highly attuned commercial judgment gained within the Third sector or wider industry.

The successful candidate will have the ability to affect and lead positive change through strong convictions and the ability to make a stand for what they believe in. In addition, they will possess a high degree of self-insight and awareness, being able to adapt behaviour to optimise their impact on the business while making effective decisions, understanding their consequences, and following these through for the good of the overall organisation. Possessing a desire to work in Third Sector, the successful candidate must also be patient and respectful of all people, whatever their background or presenting behaviour and appreciate the impact of Cyrenians’ work and its values.
