Originally from Fife and a lifelong Dunfermline Athletic supporter, Gareth enjoys spending his free time outdoors, working his way through Scotland’s Munros and making the most of the country’s landscapes. When he’s not on the hills or the golf course, you’ll often find him in the kitchen, where cooking provides a welcome change of pace from the fast-moving world of recruitment.
From Aberdeen Student to Audit Trainee
Not everyone follows a straight path into their career. Gareth’s journey is a good example of how being open to change, trying new things, and staying consistent can lead to long-term success.
After leaving school, Gareth headed to the University of Aberdeen to study Accounting and Finance. Like many people, university felt like the expected next step rather than a decision driven by a clear passion. While he enjoyed aspects of the experience and worked part-time jobs, including as a barista at Costa Coffee, he quickly realised that the university environment wasn’t the right fit for him.
Looking for more structure and a clearer sense of purpose, Gareth applied for a trainee role in audit. Following an assessment centre in London, he secured a position and made the big move to Newcastle at just 18 years old. Living independently and studying towards his CA qualification was a significant challenge, but it provided valuable experience and exposure to a range of businesses and projects.
Discovering a Career in Recruitment
Although he enjoyed the variety and people-facing elements of audit, Gareth recognised that his future lay elsewhere. After two years in Newcastle, he began exploring recruitment. Armed with an updated CV and a willingness to learn, he applied to recruitment firms across Edinburgh and secured his first role in the industry in 2015.
The transition was a culture shock. Recruitment moved at a much faster pace than anything Gareth had experienced before. But the energy, variety, and opportunity appealed to him.
After spending nine months with his first recruitment company, Gareth joined iMultiply in August 2016. Nearly a decade later, he is still here and has played a key role in the firm’s growth.
Starting as the sole recruiter focused on accountancy practice across Scotland, Gareth built his expertise in what initially seemed like a narrow market. He was promoted to Senior Consultant in 2018 and later joined the leadership team in 2021. Along the way, he has managed and developed people, built long-term client relationships, and helped countless professionals take the next step in their careers.
A Decade on at iMultiply
Reflecting on his career, Gareth credits consistency as one of the biggest factors behind his success. While recruitment brings its fair share of highs and lows, he focuses on maintaining a level approach and appreciating the compounding impact of small actions over time. He also believes that continuous learning is essential, regardless of experience level.
Now, nearly ten years into his recruitment career, Gareth remains motivated by helping businesses find great people and supporting individuals as they navigate important career decisions. It is a role that continues to challenge him, and that’s exactly what keeps it interesting.
